Speech Sound Disorders
A speech sound disorder means a child has trouble saying certain sounds the right way, past the time it is developmentally appropriate. This can make it hard for you or others to understand them. It can cause frustration for both you and your child. For example, you child may say “wed” instead of “red” or "tat" for "cat". If your child has predictable error patterns in their speech it may be a phonological disorder.
Expressive and Receptive Language
Some children may have trouble expressing themselves clearly, even if they understand what others are saying. This is called an expressive language disorder—they might struggle to find the right words, form complete sentences, use correct grammar, or retell stories.

On the other hand, a receptive language disorder means a child might have difficulty understanding what’s being said to them. They may find it hard to understand content, follow directions, answer questions, or learn new words.
Social/Pragmatic Language
A weakness in social skills means a child may have trouble using language in social situations. This affects their ability to build and maintain relationships with peers and family. They might struggle to know what to say, when to say it, or how to say it depending on where they are at and who they’re talking to. For example, they may have a hard time taking turns in conversation, staying on topic, understanding jokes or sarcasm, or using the right tone of voice.

Why Teletherapy?
the rationale
Teletherapy is perhaps most alluring due to it's convenience and effectiveness. Your child can attend their personalized session in the comfort of your home, which often helps children feel more relaxed. This also eliminates travel time that for many families can be from 20-60+ minutes, in addition to being easier on parents with multiple children in tow. Teletherapy connects you with a qualified provider that might not have been available to you otherwise. With Teletherapy, you can ensure consistent care and progress for your child's communication development.

Teletherapy is research supported. Studies show that teletherapy is as effective as in-person therapy for many speech and language disorders.

How does teletherapy work?
Using your computer, tablet, or smart phone, your child will connect for therapy using a secure platform for a two-way live video -think of it like Face Time. Telehealth sessions are conducted in the same format as an in-person sessions. We'll review session goals, and your child will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities, and interactive games applicable to their goals. Children of all ages are encouraged to share their interests and when possible, these topics can be incorporated into sessions in a way that targets their goals.
Bright Path Speech therapy uses lots of positive encouragement, praising students for their personal successes.
For some children, a parent or other adult may be asked to be present to provide cueing and “hands-on” techniques or help with camera angles, if needed. If you have questions about whether your child is a good fit for teletherapy, please reach out by scheduling a consultation.
